Material Science and Engineering

Main energy field:

My research long-term vision is to create atomically designed nanocrystals, that will serve as technology enablers at the place where current materials and methods reach their physical limit. The prime vision is to create materials in an atom-by-atom approach, where the selection of composition, morphology, and assemblies results in emerging functionalities. Upon implantation into more complex structures, these materials result in devices with never-before-seen characteristics based on quantum confinement of excitons, morphological control, and cooperative effects. Recent examples are the utilization of quantum and dielectric effects in cesium lead halides nanoplates and nanowires. I showed a way to control the thickness of nanoplates with monolayer precision and engineer light-matter interactions to generate excitons with narrow energy bands and bright emissions. Such engineered materials were recently implemented by us into waveguides serving as single-photon sources. In another example, nanocrystals assembled into arrays displayed unique, coherent superfluorescence when excited with a free electron beam.
